Trailer Time: Contagion, El Bulli, Dream House, Higher Ground, Drive

Stephen Soderberg's latest film Contagion is bound to hit me personally on two levels: It takes place in the backyard of the SF Bay Area, and I am such a contamination-OCD freak. Thus, this is my WORST NIGHTMARE. But this looks good.

On to another personal connection to a film, in this case food. But on a level faaaaar from my limited culinary experiences. Now closed, El Bulli used to be the best high-class restaurant in the world with its unbelievable, mind-boggling culinary creations. This documentary goes behind the scenes and explores the famed kitchen of renowned chef Ferran Adria.

While it seems like a typical scary-house flick, with certain tones slightly reminding me of Shutter Island, Dream House looks creepy and intriguing enough to be worth a shot. And with a cast like this, I hope so.

While skeptical at first sight of the plot and subject manner, Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground seems much more complex than a "religious film" might seem to be. Her directorial-debut centers around a woman and her life-long journey in exploring and embracing religion and faith. It looks neither blindly ideological nor cynical. Already receiving acclaim from Sundance, this is one to keep an eye on.

And probably my favorite trailer as of late, Drive by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. The film has received a lot of buzz, especially since Refn won the Best Director award at Cannes for it. The trailer finally premiered at ComicCon and it looks damn good. Judging from the trailer and clip that was previously released, it looks like the film holds a delicate and suspenseful balance between tense silences and explosive violence. And again Gosling portrays a complex, if not psychotic, man with potentially some redeeming qualities. I really can't wait to watch this.
