Trailer Time: Shame

Shame from UK director Steve McQueen is about to be released through FoxSearchLight in a few months, and I can't be more excited. Particularly after the release of the second trailer, and it is tasty.

It isn't that much different from the first trailer which contains much of the same images and clips (considering all the talk about the amount of daring frontal nudity and sexuality, I'm surprised they've gathered THAT much preview-friendly material). But the second trailer features less dialogue, and is instead played to Carey Mulligan's character singing a rendition of "New York, New York." And it's pretty heart-breaking.

This trailer feels a lot more effective than the previous. Rather than telling what the movie is about through chopped up dialogue bits, it shows us. In fact the only word of dialogue is from Michael Fassbender, telling a prostitute (I assume) to take her top off "slowly," along with a few sound bites of sighs and the rustling of money. Fassbender's character goes from woman to woman, looking at them with desperation, desire, and loneliness. In that sense, the song is perfect because it is about finding an escape from exactly that kind of despair.

The film is garnering crazy buzz, as is Fassbender and his career. Although much discussion has been going on about him in the film blog-o-sphere, this actually may be his star-making turn. Cue screaming fan-girls. Before that happens, I'd just like to say that I knew about him before he was Mr. Rochester, before he was Magneto, and certainly before he went around showing half of New York how endowed he is. Seriously, when am I going to be able to watch this movie???
