Movie Mix 'n Mash: 'Arry Pottah, Wheels, and 2010

*DJ and known remixer Mike Relm
Aside from Facebook and autotune, mashups and remixes are probably just as much as definable icons of this generation. Thanks to our technological age and blatant disregard for copyright laws, images and sounds from here, there, and everywhere can be edited in the hands of creative talents (with a lot of time on their hands) and turn them into something completely different than its original version. Here are a few recent favorites after the jump.

Edgar Wright is a young director, already with Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World on his CV. Recently he's posted a few early videos he made in film school, using mostly TV-recorded VHS copies to compile clips from various movies. It's easy to see his great sense of timing (super essential in Mash Up-making), hitting musical/dramatic/comedic beats in his humble little video. Here's "Wheels on Wheels" as set to the Beatles' Helter Skelter. And as a little note from the filmmaker himself: "Apologies to any rights holders, I was young and foolish, I didn't know what I was doing. Please don't arrest me, I will take it down and step away from the keyboard if necessary."

Next up is a video from Bay Area DJ/VJ Mike Relm (*seen above)- Harry Potter and the Remix of Death. In prep for the last 2 entries in the Harry Potter Saga, he put together a remix using all of the HP films to date, including the famous musical themes from the soundtrack. In a manner befitting the series itself, it is nothing less than epic.

Last but not least is Filmography 2010. As good as the other vids are, this one is just masterful and mind-boggling. This remixer used clips from over 250 movies made/released in 2010 and weaved them into this homage to a year in films and filmmaking. 250! Here's to an interesting year of films as we're already a quarter into this one.
